SUBSTRATE SPECS & MECHANICAL CHALLENGES:

- Panel Faces: AraucoPly® Sanded Plywood (100% Radiata Pine softwood). High porosity prone to grain rise and tannin/resin bleeding under water-based coatings.

- Edge Profiles: Fully assembled joints sealed with a heavy layer of cured Titebond Wood Glue. Creates a slick, non-porous PVA plastic shell that standard latex coatings cannot grip.


PRODUCT WORKBENCH INVENTORY:

- Tint Modifier: Sherwin-Williams B42 B 81 (Waterborne Black Dryfall)

- Grain-Filler Base: Zinsser FastPrime (Water-Base White)

VERIFIED STEP-BY-STEP PREP & FINISHING WORKFLOW:


1. MECHANICAL EDGE PREP (TITEBOND GLAZE BREAK)

Run the 7-inch orbital sander flat along the Titebond-glued edges using 150-grit paper. Keep the pad flat to avoid rounding sharp 90-degree corners. Move steadily to prevent frictional heat from melting the glue. Sand strictly until the glossy glaze turns into a uniform, matte scratch profile to create mechanical "teeth."


2. EDGE CHEMICAL BRIDGE (B-I-N SYNTHETIC SHELLAC)

Brush or roll one coat of Zinsser B-I-N Synthetic Shellac exclusively over the newly scuffed glue edges and interior cutout rounds. This non-water-based shellac permanently adheres to the slick PVA glue, locks in pine resins, and seals the end-grain plies without causing water-induced wood swelling.


3. CUSTOM DARK GREY GRAIN FILLER (FASTPRIME MIX)

Mix 5% to 10% black B42 Dryfall into white water-based FastPrime to hit a solid industrial dark grey. Roll a heavy coat onto the flat plywood faces using a 4-inch cloth roller. Once completely dry, hand-sand the faces aggressively with a rigid sanding block and 220-grit paper to cut the resulting grain rise and cloth roller stipple texture perfectly flat.


4. FLEXIBLE ADHESION COAT (BULLS EYE MIX)

Tint your white Bulls Eye primer to match the dark grey using your B42 Dryfall. Roll one uniform coat across the entire cabinet (faces and edges). This acrylic layer creates a flexible, vibration-resistant bridge that protects the finish against deep bass cabinet flexing.


5. INDUSTRIAL SHEEN APPLICATION (MINWAX POLYCRYLIC SATIN)

Roll 2 to 3 thin coats of Minwax Polycrylic Satin using your 4-inch charcoal high-density foam roller (with micro-ridges). Apply zero downward pressure. While the clear coat is wet, perform a single-direction, ultra-light "back-feathering" pass over each panel to pop micro-bubbles before the film flashes dry. 


6. CRITICAL COMPRESSION CURE

Wait a full 72 hours for the Polycrylic clear coat to reach maximum chemical hardness before final assembly. Pre-drill all pilot holes for hardware screws to prevent cracking the rigid shellac base. Dust a microscopic layer of talcum/baby powder onto the paint surface where closed-cell foam or rubber speaker gaskets sit to prevent the hardware from chemically bonding to and tearing the finish over time.
